What is a Flexible Instruction Day (FID)?

With the passage of Act 64 of 2019, school districts in Pennsylvania were able to develop plans for Flexible Instruction Days, otherwise known as a "FID." A FID allows students to complete both an attendance log and all assigned work from home during a school day that may otherwise be canceled, such as when it snows or when there's a building emergency. These days are then counted as full instructional days to meet the 180 days of instruction that are required by the PA Department of Education. While not all snow days or emergencies will be FIDs, should the District choose to use one, we can do so up to five times during a school year. To help students, teachers will be available for questions and help during the FID by email and during designated office hours.

To be considered "present," students must complete assigned work. They must also record their attendance on the Google Form or by calling their respective attendance line no later than 10AM:

  • High School: 610-779-3060, press 2
  • Junior High: 610-779-3320, press 2
  • Reiffton: 610-779-7640, press 2
  • Jacksonwald: 610-779-1820, press 2
  • Lorane: 610-582-8608, press 2
  • Owatin Creek: 610-406-4580, press 2

Please also call your respective school's attendance line if you are experiencing significant power or internet outages and you cannot record attendance or access and complete schoolwork.

Procedures

ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES:

  • On the morning of the FID, students must log on and record their attendance by 10AM using the designated Google Form attendance log for their building. Please click on the button above to access this form.
  • Families experiencing problems with internet connectivity must call the school office by 10AM to report student attendance.
  • Any student whose attendance has not been reported by 10AM via the Google Form or by telephone will be marked absent for the day.

SCHOOLWORK PROCEDURES:

  • Grades K-2: Teachers will send assignments home with students in grades K-2 prior to the FID. Assignments also will be posted in the folder above. Students in grades K-2 must complete all assignments on the day of the FID and submit the assignments to their teacher upon their return to school.
  • Grades 3-12: Teachers will post schoolwork for students in grades 3-12 on Schoology by 9AM on the FID. Students in grades 3-12 must complete and submit their assignments to their teacher via Schoology on the FID or to their teacher upon their return to school as directed.
  • Grades K-4 Special Areas (Art, Library, Music, Health/Phys. Ed.): Students in grades K-6 should complete the assignment(s) for the special area class they would have attended on the day of the FID. For students in grades K-4, these assignments will be included with the assignments from the homeroom teacher. For students in grades 5-6, these assignments will be posted on Schoology.
  • All teachers and professional staff members will be available via email during the FID. In addition, all teachers and professional staff will have a designated office hour during the FID day.
  • Assignments for students with special needs will be developed utilizing their program modifications, specially designed instruction and supplementary aids and services identified in their Individualized Education Plans. Any related services (Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech, etc.) that cannot be provided remotely on the FID will be rescheduled according to the frequency requirements of the student's IEP.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • Exeter Cyber Academy (ECA): Students enrolled in Exeter Cyber Academy should complete assignments following their normal schedule.
  • Athletics and Extracurricular Activities: The District will make a separate decision on whether to hold athletics and extracurricular activities.
  • Technology Support: Students or families experiencing technical difficulties may visit the Technology Department page for help resources at exetersd.org/tech or by calling the technology support line at 610-898-9585.
  • Food Service: Meals will not be provided on a FID.

FAQs

How will I know if there's a FID?

When a FID will be used, the District will communicate via ParentSquare that a FID is in place--similar to how school closings and delays are announced. Information also will be posted on the website.

How are FIDs used?

Most school districts use a FID in lieu of a day off for inclement weather or an emergency.

How many FIDs may a school district use annually?

A total of five FIDs may be used annually.

Will student attendance on a FID count?

Yes. Attendance is required on a FID, and each FID will count as a regular school day. Students must record their attendance via the Google Form attendance log or by calling their home building attendance line:

  • High School: 610-779-3060, press 2
  • Junior High: 610-779-3320, press 2
  • Reiffton: 610-779-7640, press 2
  • Jacksonwald: 610-779-1820, press 2
  • Lorane: 610-582-8608, press 2
  • Owatin Creek: 610-406-4580, press 2

Will student work be graded?

Yes. Student work will be graded in accordance with class guidelines.

How can I communicate with teachers and other professional staff members?

Students and families may contact teachers via email or by a message on the teacher's classroom telephone line. Staff members will check email/phone messages throughout the day and respond in a timely manner.
