If there is an immediate concern about a child's safety please call 911

  • Withdrawing from family, friends and/or activities
  • Changing friends
  • Having a hard time making or keeping friends
  • Unexplained physical injuries
  • Feeling sad

  • Talking about suicide
  • Defying authority, both at home and school
  • Acting aggressively

Are you concerned about your child's reaction to...

  • Recent death of a loved one
  • Divorce of parents
  • Family relocation
  • A relationship problem
  • Bullying
  • Other traumatic event

Our Student Assistance Program (SAP) is a process in which we can help to identify, assist and support students who may be experiencing barriers to learning due to academic, social and/or emotional struggles.

Our team is a combination of school and agency staff who will help you find services and assistance within the school, and if needed, in the community. We are unable to diagnose or provide therapy, but we will provide parents with information and resources so that they can make an informed decision that best fits their students' needs and wishes. As the parent, you are an important part of the team.  The SAP team's information is completely confidential and the team will respect you and your child's privacy at all times.

How can my student become involved in the SAP Program?

Anyone can refer a student to the SAP Team. Some students are referred by teachers or other school personnel. Friends or family members can also let the SAP team know they are worried. The child can go directly to the SAP team to ask for help. Schools will gather observable information to determine how a student is doing in his/her classes. The team will work with you to develop a plan of action to help your child achieve success in school. We will not proceed if you are not on board. Participation in the program is voluntary.

Schools need families, and families need schools

An ideal partnership between the family and SAP team includes:

  • A shared goal of helping the student
  • Mutual respect
  • Appreciation and Identification of students and families strengths, ideas, feelings and culture
  • Open communication
  • Joint problem solving
  • Shared responsibilities for follow-through

To learn more, please contact your child's counselor, Kate Atkinson, by email or phone at 610-779-1820 x5210.
