Quickstart Chromebook Guide for Families

Exeter Township School District provides students with district-managed devices to support learning at school and, depending on grade level, at home. Use this page to quickly find the information you need to help your child get connected, logged in and ready to learn.

Connect your Chromebook to home Wi-Fi

  1. Turn on the Chromebook.
  2. Select the network/battery area in the bottom-right corner.
  3. Select your home Wi-Fi network.
  4. Enter your Wi-Fi password and choose “Connect.”

Once connected, the Chromebook should automatically reconnect when it is within range of that network.

  1. Log into Skyward
  2. Select Portfolio on the left margin
  3. Select the link for the Student Password Report for (School)
  4. After selecting the link, the screen will display a View Report button. Click that button to view your child’s username and password.
  5. Logins are formatted as username@myexeter.org (i.e., a username of “jlcgm000” would be jlcgm000@myexeter.org).

Grade K-1 students will be issued a QR code to login to their device and to access the Clever Portal to access their programs and resources. 

If the Chromebook is not working or becomes damaged, please do not attempt to repair or modify your Chromebook. Please contact us right away:

  • Students at school can seek help by visiting the Chromebook Center.
  • Students at home can use Incident IQ to report issues or contact the support person in their Chromebook Center:

Families may purchase optional Chromebook insurance for $10 per year.

The insurance provides:

  • Two accidental-damage incidents per coverage year with a $0 deductible.
  • Coverage from September through September.

A third accidental-damage claim may result in the family being responsible for the full repair cost, up to the cost of replacing the device.

What Isn't Covered?

Insurance does not cover every type of loss or damage. Examples of exclusions include:

  • Intentional, dishonest, fraudulent or criminal acts.
  • Damage that occurs when the Chromebook is not being carried in the district-provided case.
  • Damage that is not reported within seven business days.
  • Lost or misplaced devices or hardware.

Virtual learning (otherwise known as a Flexible Instructional Day, or FID) may be used when weather or another circumstance prevents students from attending school in person.

On an FID:

  • Students complete assigned work virtually.
  • Teachers are available to answer questions and provide help.
  • Students are finished once all of their assigned work is complete.
  • Teachers will communicate information about how families can contact them during the FID.
  • Optional virtual check-ins may also be available to help students and families locate assignments or ask questions.

FAQs

  • Students in kindergarten use iPads and first and second grade students use Chromebooks at school with limits on the amount of time they spend on the device. For these grades, devices will normally remain at school and will only be sent home during the winter in case students would need them for a virtual learning day (FID). Students in grades 3-12 use Chromebooks during the school day and bring them home each evening to support learning outside of school.

    If your child brings a Chromebook/iPad home, please:

    • Return it to school the next day.
    • Make sure it is fully charged.
    • Keep it in the case (if provided) when carrying it or placing it in a backpack.

  • District-issued devices use filtered internet access both at school and at home. Additionally, students are only able to send and receive email from Exeter-based accounts.

    While the district provides internet filtering, no filter can block every inappropriate website or piece of content. We strongly encourage famlies to talk with their children about making safe and responsible choices online. In addition, please talk to your child about the importance of not letting other students use their Chromebook as any inappropriate activity will be tied to the student who was issued the device.

    Additional resources for parents:

  • District-issued devices are school property, and the district reserves the right to inspect or search them. Internet traffic on student devices is also filtered and monitored.

  • No. While Chromebooks have cameras for educational use, the district does not have the ability to remotely access the webcam.

  • Students are expected to use district technology safely, responsibly and primarily for educational purposes. Students may not:

    • Bypass or attempt to bypass district internet filters.
    • Access, create or share inappropriate, harmful, threatening or unlawful content, including cyberbullying.
    • Share personal information or access another person's account or data.
    • Record students or staff without their knowledge or permission.
    • Download unauthorized software or distribute copyrighted materials without permission.
    • Remove district identification labels or add stickers or markings to the device.
    • Use a charger or power adapter other than one issued by Exeter IT.

    Violations may result in disciplinary action in accordance with school policies.

  • Students are expected to use the Chromebook for educational purposes during school hours and at home. The Chromebook should be used to create files, projects, videos, webpages, podcasts and other avtivities using electronic resources that are directly related to classroom content and curriculum, or as directed by a teacher/administrator. 

  • Online gaming is not permitted during the school day unless a teacher is using it for an instructional purpose. Students may not install gaming software on district devices.

  • At school, students may listen to music only with teacher permission and must use earbuds or headphones. The district does not provide earbuds. At home, music use is subject to household rules.

  • No. Students may not install software unless it has been approved and directed by the Exeter Information Technology Department.

  • Printing is limited because students are encouraged to submit work electronically through tools such as Google Drive, Google Classroom and Schoology. When printing is necessary, students need teacher or supervisor permission and may only print school-related materials.

  • Yes. Students receive a district-managed Google account for educational use, including access to Google products and Gmail. Students should keep their usernames and passwords private and use their accounts for school-related purposes.

  • Problems or damage should be reported to the district as soon as possible. Only Exeter IT Department staff are authorized to repair or alter district equipment. When necessary, the district will provide a temporary device while the student's device is being repaired.

    • Chromebooks: Up to $350
    • AC Adapter: Up to $40
    • Case: $15

    The district will issue an invoice for technology repairs/replacements. As a reminder, insurance is available for $10. 

  • Report the theft to the district immediately. Theft claims require an official police report. The district can assist with locating and replacing the equipment.

  • No. Students should only use the power adapter or cord issued by the Exeter IT Department. Replacement adapters must also be obtained through the IT Department.

  • No. Each device is assigned to an individual student and may not be loaned to another student. The student to whom the device is assigned is responsible for any damage to it. Students should also never share their usernames or passwords.

  • Students may not put stickers, decals or other markings directly on the Chromebook or alter district identification labels. A student's name may be added using a removable label. Students may also purchase and personalize an appropriate case or sleeve that follows district policy.

  • Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth; microfiber is recommended. Do not use cleaning products containing acetone or ammonia.

  • Do not expose the device to extreme temperatures or leave it in a vehicle for an extended period. When traveling, close the lid and keep the device in its assigned case.

  • Chromebooks, chargers, protective sleeves and other district-issued equipment remain the property of Exeter Township School District.

  • All district-issued equipment must be returned when a student withdraws or otherwise leaves the district.
