Science Olympiad to Compete in State Tournament

Congratulations to our Senior High's Science Olympiad team who qualified for states during the regional tournament yesterday at Kutztown University! During the competition, students, who are advised by Mrs. Amber Bollinger and Mr. William Lasky, test their knowledge in many different areas of science, including earth science, biology, chemistry, physics or engineering by competing in events against other schools, such as building structures, creating design logs and data tables, and completing lab practicals or exams. During yesterday's competition, Gillian Foster and Zak Kauffman placed first in Forestry; Katie Hoover, Hansika Kunduru, and Alex Nerney placed second in Experimental Design; Chase Cupitt and Anthony Tartaglia placed third in Astronomy; Gillian Foster and Audrey Gielrich placed third in Rocks and Minerals; and Ella Lynch and Aubrey Ridge placed first in Cyber Security. Congratulations to all of our members who participate in this extracurricular after-school club, and best wishes to all of them at the state tournament, which will be held in State College in April!

Seniors Earn National African American Recognition Award from the College Board

Seniors Jason Lee and Malayna Spiller received the National African American Recognition Award from the College Board due to their outstanding academic achievements in school and performance on College Board assessments. More than 180,000 students from all 50 states were eligible to apply for the College Board National Recognition Programs, which grant students with academic honors that can be included on college and scholarship applications. These National Recognition Programs grant underrepresented students with academic honors that can be included on college and scholarship applications and connect students with universities across the country, helping them meaningfully connect to colleges and stand out during the admissions process. 

Jason is the son of Rafaela Lopez and Freddy Lee and plans to attend Penn State University to major in electrical engineering. He is a member of the Technology Student Association, Spanish Club and played football and tennis during high school. Malayna is the daughter of Mylissa and Marcus Spiller and also plans to attend Penn State University to major in finance. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish Club, a Mini-THON leader and participated in dance throughout high school.

Students were eligible to apply for this national recognition if they had a GPA of 3.5 or higher, excelled on the PSAT/NMSQT or PSAT 10 or earned a score of three or higher on two or more AP Exams; and are African American or black, Hispanic American or Latino, indigenous and/or attend school in a rural area or small town. Congratulations to both Jason and Malayna for earning this national award!

27 Technology Student Association (TSA) Students Move onto State Competition

The senior high's Technology Student Association (TSA) has been at work since September to compete in this year’s regional competition, where they placed in the top five in 25 different events–including eight 1st place, five 2nd place and six 3rd place finishers. Even more impressively, 27 students were selected to present their work in the state competition next month--an Exeter record! TSA is a voluntary after-school STEM club where students work to create technology-based projects for specific events ranging from everything from biotechnology to fashion, board game design to debating, and robotics to writing extemporaneous essays. The club is overseen by Mr. Zachary Potter and Mr. Terry Lorah and meets weekly. We’re pleased to present a selection of students and their winning work and wish them all of the best in mid April when they travel to western PA to present their projects for the state-level competition!

Junior Gaige Gabriel Selected for National Volleyball Team

Junior Gaige Gabriel was selected as one of 18 players nationally to make the roster for USA Volleyball for the 2023 NORCECA Continental USA U19 National Team. He'll head to California this weekend to train at USA Volleyball's Anaheim National Team Training Center, where, at the end of next week, he'll find out if he's been selected to make the traveling 12-man roster to represent the United States. If selected, he'll compete with players from around the world as the US team travels to Guatemala City to compete on March 11-19 in the 2023 NORCECA Boys U19 Continental Championship. The NORCECA is a required event prior to the World Championships being held in Argentina in August of 2023.

Gabriel, who announced his commitment to play volleyball at Penn State in December, plays for Exeter as well as the Yorktowne Volleyball Club, and was selected for the 2021 and 2022 BCIAA boys' volleyball all-star team as well as the 2022 District 3 All States. Standing at an impressive 6'8," Gabriel's been playing the sport since seventh grade when he was recruited to play thanks to his height. In a short amount of time, however, he's proven he's more than just a tall kid, rising from a locally-known to a national player with more than ten Division I offers to play volleyball after he graduates from Exeter next year. Humble about his success, Gaige said he was honored to have been selected and said, "I was so excited when I found out. Nothing could kill my mood for the next week."

Gabriel is the second player in Exeter history have been chosen for this national honor with the last player, Pieter Olree, being selected in the late 90s. Orlee went on to play volleyball professionally after his graduation from Ohio State.

18 Students Exhibit Artwork in County-Wide Exhibit

Eighteen Exeter Township Senior High art students had their work juried into the Wyomissing Art Institute's Yocum Gallery during a county-wide exhibit that ran from the end of January through February. A special congratulations to McKenna Barker who won the Fred and Deb Gurman award, and Destiny Stoltz, Liz Curry, Morgan Herb and Katie Ryan who won honorable mentions during the county-wide exhibit, as well as the rest of our artists, including:

Each year, the Yocum Institute for Arts Education welcomes aspiring young artists from Berks County to submit their work for a juried exhibit to be held at the Yocum Institute. This provides students with an opportunity to present their original works of art to the public in a professional gallery setting as well as compete for cash prizes and tuition to Yocum Institute classes.

The competition is open to all full-time junior and senior high school students that reside in or attend school in Berks County. The original work presented features oil, watercolor, ceramics, mixed media, acrylic paint, sculpture and 3D art.

History Teachers Have Their Own History in Exeter

In the fall of 1995 at Exeter Township Junior High, seventh graders Matthew Burkhart and Dena Caldwell met on the first day of school when their alphabetically-ordered last names caused their lockers to be placed opportunely next to each other. Over the course of the next few days, a young Matt and Dena became friends. And soon afterwards, a couple. And despite the lack of longevity in young romances, Matt and Dena defied all odds as they continued to date through junior high, and then high school. By the time they reached their senior year, they were selected to be on prom court together, and their classmates bestowed the adorable title of “cutest couple” to them in their yearbook (incidentally, it’s a title that we’re sure they’d still earn today). 

After their 2001 graduation from Exeter, Matt chose to pursue a baseball scholarship at Tusculum University in Tennessee. Dena stayed closer to home to study at Lebanon Valley College. After a year, Matt decided to move closer to home to study education and play baseball at DeSales University. As Dena was finishing up her post-baccalaureate work and student teaching, Matt proposed, presenting Dena with a ring and a desk plaque that said “Mrs. Burkhart” that still sits on the corner of her desk today. They married a year and a half later.

Today, 28 years after the day they met in the hallway of Exeter Township Junior High, it seems no accident that Matt and Dena both love to teach history. After all, they share so much of it together in the same buildings and the same classrooms where they now inspire the next generation of Eagles. The Exeter community is so much a part of their love story, too: Despite initially getting teaching jobs in other districts, both Matt and Dena jumped on teaching opportunities to return to Exeter where they once met and dated. And despite buying their “forever” home in Douglassville, Dena says that when it came time for her three kids–Ava (grade 6), Logan (grade 4) and Cole (kindergarten)–to attend school, she couldn’t envision them not attending the same schools where their young relationship first began. “Matt looked at me one night in our old house and was like, ‘We can stay in Daniel Boone, or you can put a for sale sign out.’ So we put our house on the market and sold it in six days and moved to Exeter.”

Dena continues, “There are just so many opportunities here in Exeter that we couldn’t imagine not raising our kids here. The teachers that are here–yes, we know them since we work with them–but we see that dedication and the special connections they have with students and we know they'll go that extra distance for students here. It’s the extracurricular clubs, the sports, the educational opportunities such as AP and Honors programs… What we have here and what opportunities we had ourselves as kids was a huge reason we decided we wanted to raise our family here,” she says. “We love Exeter–we really do.”
