A Message to the ETSD Community Regarding Escaped Inmate Danelo Cavalcante

September 12, 2023

Dear Exeter Families,

In our partnership with the Exeter Township Police Department, we have been actively monitoring the situation in northern Chester County and the search for the escaped inmate, Danelo Cavalcante. As many of you may be aware, in consultation with law enforcement, the Owen J. Roberts school district closed today following a reported sighting of a man believed to be Cavalcante in an area near their schools last night. Law enforcement also believes that he now has a firearm.

At this time, we have been assured there is no direct threat to the Exeter community and the search area for Cavalcante has not moved into Berks County. In our steadfast commitment to the safety and security of our school community, we want to assure you that our district’s Safety & Security Coordinator, Eric Seidel, as well as central office administrators, are in constant contact with the Exeter Township Police Department to receive the latest information and developments in the search for Cavalcante.

In consultation with the Exeter Police, we have been informed that there is no reason to change or disrupt the normal operations of our schools at this time. Unless otherwise advised, we will continue to hold outdoor athletics and activities (recess, physical education classes) for our students while we remain vigilant and watchful.

The PA State Police would like to reinforce the following security measures for community members to increase your awareness and caution:
Residents in the area are asked to continue to lock all external doors and windows, secure vehicles, and remain indoors. Please review your surveillance cameras and contact police if you observe anything suspicious. If you see him, do not approach. Call 911 immediately. Please call (717) 562-2987 with general tips and information.

Cavalcante is described as a male of Hispanic descent, approximately 5’0” in height and clean shaven. We’ve attached police-released photos of him. If you believe you have seen Cavalcante, please call 911 immediately.

The Exeter Township Police Department will continue to be a presence around our schools and our schools will continue to implement our universal safety procedures and protocols that are designed to keep our students and our staff in one of the safest and securest locations in the area.

Thank you.

For 22 years, we’ve reminded ourselves to “never forget” the innocent victims and the fallen heroes of September 11th. At Exeter Township Senior High, we’ve held tightly onto that promise each year with a moving and patriotic school ceremony meant to honor a local first responder; pay homage to the police, fire and EMS workers who protect our schools and our community; and to remind our students about the terrible events on that tragic day years before they were born.

“Although none of our students were alive in 2001, we all know that day and the years that followed were life-changing,” said Principal Mr. Tom Campbell. “We are glad to share our experiences and stories with our students and hope that those conversations continue at home. Everyone who was old enough to remember that day remembers exactly where they were and what the days and weeks after it were like.”

Following a moving violin performance by junior Esteban Ruiz-Velazquez and the senior high marching band and color guard, Assistant Principal Mr. Frank Vecchio and Social Studies teacher Mr. Matt Burkhart spoke to students about their remembrances of 9/11 as a young teacher and college-aged student, respectively. Mr. Vecchio then presented a flag to paramedic, Mr. Jon Paul Staley, who was selected by members of Life Lion, and was described as an altruistic servant whose commitment to saving lives goes beyond the call of duty. “He is selfless and and has a passion for providing critical care,” said Mr. Vecchio as he shook Mr. Staley’s hand in recognition of his dedication to his decades of work as a first responder in Berks, Montgomery and Chester counties.

“Today we take the time to honor first responders and soldiers who made great sacrifices on 9/11 and every day since then,” said Mr. Vecchio during the ceremony. “Thank you for coming together as a community to do just that.”

Steve Sieller Announced as Lorane’s Next Principal

August 16, 2023

seiller

The Exeter Township School District is pleased to announce that Mr. Steve Sieller has been hired to be Lorane Elementary’s next principal. Mr. Sieller has spent his professional career in elementary education and elementary leadership, serving presently as the principal at West Pottsgrove Elementary since 2019, and previously as the assistant principal at Lower Pottsgrove Elementary. Prior to that, he was a fourth grade and ESL resource teacher and assistant principal in the Reading School District. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Albright College, and a master’s degree in School Leadership from the University of Pennsylvania. He lives in Berks County with his wife, Summer, and two children, Claire and Jack, who attend Daniel Boone schools.

“We are thrilled to welcome Mr. Sieller to Exeter,” said Dr. Christy Haller. “He has a rich and experienced career in elementary education and leadership, which will allow him to jump right into a successful start at school this fall.” Mr. Sieller expressed similar excitement after his hire was confirmed by the Board last evening. “I am looking forward to partnering with the teachers, staff and families of Lorane Elementary school to support the safety and success of our students.”

Mr. Sieller's exact start date is to be determined; in the meantime, Dr. Maggie Wright is serving as the interim principal at Lorane Elementary.

Back-to-School Checklist

August 4, 2023

Day
Hour
Minute
Second

We can't wait to see you on August 24th!

  • Complete the returning student update in Skyward on August 11th

    https://skyward.iscorp.com/scripts/wsisa.dll/WService=wseduexeterpa/fwemnu01.w
Skyward will open after 3PM on Friday, August 11th. We recommend completing the Returning Student Update on a desktop/laptop computer rather than a mobile device. A parent/guardian will need to go through this step first in order to access their child's teacher, schedule and bus route information.

  • View your schedule, teacher and bus route information

    https://skyward.iscorp.com/scripts/wsisa.dll/WService=wseduexeterpa/fwemnu01.w
After you've completed the Returning Student Update on August 11th, please log in from a desktop/laptop to find:

    • Teacher/Schedule Information: In the left column, click on the "Schedule" tab.
    • Bus Information: In the left column, click on the "Busing" tab.
Please note: Navigation in the app differs from these steps; we recommend you use a desktop/computer for the easiest navigation.
  • Verify your ParentSquare account

All users must go through a one-time two-factor authentication step to confirm their email and cell phone number to log into www.parentsquare.com. The email and cell phone number must match the records we have in Skyward. If you have already verified your account and there have been no changes in your contact information or account from last year, you will not need to complete this step and you will be automatically logged into the system.

  • Set your notification preferences in ParentSquare

ParentSquare allows users to customize their notifications based on notification type and also select their preferred delivery method for each school. You can choose between "instant" and "digest" notifications. The "instant" setting will send all post notifications in real-time. The "digest" setting sends direct messages, alerts, and time-sensitive posts instantly, but sends all non-time sensitive posts around 6:30PM, reducing the number of notifications you receive daily. (We recommend the "digest" setting.)

    • From www.parentsquare.com: On your home page, click your name and select "My account." Then, select "Notification Settings."
    • If you are using the mobile app: From your home screen, click the triple bar in the top left corner. Click on "Account," then "Notification Settings."

  • Apply now for free and reduced lunch

    https://www.schoolnutritionandfitness.com/index.php?sid=1623783486174&page=lunchapps
