Reiffton’s Reading Olympics Earns 2nd Place in County Competition

May 23, 2024

a group of students posing in a classroom

Just one point away from first place, Reiffton's Reading Olympics team, the GOATs, earned an impressive 2nd place finish in this year's county-wide competition! Held last week at Wilson West, Exeter competed against 26 other teams from 10 Berks County school districts in a head-to-head competition where students are asked questions about 25 books on an assigned reading list. Working collaboratively, Exeter finished this year’s competition with an outstanding 72 points, placing them just one point away from Twin Valley's first-place finish of 73 points.

Reiffton's advisor to the after-school club, Mrs. Sally Lamm, said how exceptionally proud she was of her team, who are all 6th graders and compete against students in 6th, 7th and 8th grade. "They really stay focused and calm and worked together to give the most detailed answers. I'm very proud of them!"

Members of this year's Reading Olympics team include: Rachel Bright, Summer Glennon, Nadia Paduret, Nicole Okpokwu, Ashlyn Green Lewis, Hannah McDevitt, Lily Stavinga, Daniela Luna, Fi Williams, Brayden McCarthy, Gerry Mazieka, Isabella Peralta, Phoebe Wright, Rylan Seiler, Evelyn Shiffer and Emily Ridge.

Congratulations, Exeter!

May 23, 2024

two cheerleaders smile outside of the stadium

We are thrilled to announce that Lily Clouser (right) and Aubrey Auge (left) will participate in the PSFCA Big 33 67th Annual Football Classic at 7PM on May 26th at Cumberland Valley High School’s Chapman Field. Bryanna Shunk, a senior, was also invited to participate, but had to decline the invitation to cheer in the game.

According to the PSFCA, the Big 33 Football Classic is considered the "Super Bowl of High School Football," and represents a selection of the best cheerleaders and football players from around the state. Many of the players who have participated in this game are recruited by Division I colleges and universities and include notable former NFL players such as Kyle Brady, John Cappelletti, Kerry Collins, Sean Gilbert, Marvin Harrison, Jim Kelly, Dan Marino, Joe Montana, Joe Namath, Ricky Watters, Ed McCaffrey, Larry Johnson and Steve Slaton, just to name a few.

Both Aubrey and Bryanna plan to continue cheerleading when they attend college this fall at Lebanon Valley College and West Chester University, respectively. Lily, also a senior, however, will hang up her pom poms following the Big 33 game to attend Franklin & Marshall College this fall.

Students Win “Best Medical Device” in PA Governor’s STEM Competition

May 14, 2024

Seniors Alex Nerney (left), Connor Stoltzfus (middle), Sophia Jones (second from right), Hansika Kunduru (right) and junior Richter Bogust (second from left) won the award for the Best Medical Device in the final round of the PA Governor’s STEM Competition, held last week in Harrisburg. The students were one of the top 20 finalists from student groups across Pennsylvania. Their medical device is an app called “Blue Alert” that monitors the amount of blue light that a user is exposed to, which can disrupt sleep patterns. Their accompanying app collects data from the blue light sensor along with user-entered data, such as meals and caffeine intake, to give users a “sleep score” that allows them to make decisions to improve their sleep patterns.

The students partnered with a local health-based non-profit, My Gut Instinct, as well as a professor from Penn State Berks to build the blue light sensor to collect data and develop the accompanying app to log and interpret the data.

Junior Richter Bogust said that the team was inspired to create the app because of the explosion of blue light exposure in modern-day society through the use of smart phones, computers and screens--and is something that his peers are regularly exposed to with these devices. “In our own lives, we realized that we’re affected by blue light more than you’d think. However, we found that almost everyone is affected by blue light in some way since people are often on their phones before bed, or use lights that emit blue light.”

Mr. Zach Potter, advisor to the students, commended the students for their exceptional work with the protoype. “I am always proud of students like these, who despite all of their commitments to academics, athletics, family, friends, jobs and more, make time to complete an incredible project like this. Their commitment to themselves and to building the skills they will need to be successful later in life is admirable.”
